303: Command, the Pen and the Human

Overview

302 gave a fleet's nodes the two surfaces they share, a board and a checkout. This chapter is about the orders that move across them: who decides in a fleet, and how a ruling reaches every node intact. The nodes can analyse a fork, recommend an answer and build either branch, but when both options work and the deciding criterion is a value, the choice is the human's. Once a fleet is running, most of the human's work is made of those calls.

The four insights follow a ruling from start to finish. They start on the human's side, with the arbitration load and the taste the nodes cannot supply, and move to the ruling as a record, anchored to a time and a place before anyone acts on it. The third insight is the route a ruling takes, a chain of command drawn in the record and a pen the human can delegate, and the last is the hold, the order that stops work, which is a claim with its own release condition. The evidence comes from my estates' records in September, and from Lamplight's hand-authored boards in June.
